Review of Decoupled: What It’s About
A wealthy, affluent, and privileged couple is trying to break up. Starting out, the notion of the “decoupling” is presented as an intriguing narrative. Famous novelist R Madhavan, who plays the protagonist character in Arya, is only second to Chetan Bhagat in popularity. He is divorcing his venture capitalist/company creator wife Shruti (Surveen Chawla), but they were unable to easily tell their daughter this information.
They go through this “falling out of love” process by doing things they would do without each other as they take their time telling her. For them, how does it turn out? Wait for season 2 then.
Review of Decoupled: What’s Good and What’s Bad
I’ve previously appreciated Manu Joseph’s writing, and I am aware of the reasons why some people are reacting negatively to his ideas in this particular piece. One of the main reasons is because it exposes the most offensive societal stereotypes in an almost “this is how it is” manner. That is the essence of dark comedy, and people who make comparisons between Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory and Arya from Madhavan are no better than the clumsy braggarts Joseph created for this show’s extras. The hypocrisy of human nature revealed by Arya’s deeds is shocking in some places but gradually wears off in others.
The writing of Manu Joseph is both Decoupled’s greatest asset and its weakest point for a number of reasons. If I had to sum up my overall opinions of the show in one sentence, I would say that I didn’t mind Arya chanting the Gayatri Mantra at random to poke a Muslim character while he is praying the namaz in a public setting, but I didn’t find it funny when the same character was beaten up for praying the namaz on a flight in the very next scene. That is up Joseph’s work in a nutshell; it is logical at times but occasionally deviates into the ludicrous.
