The Academy Awards for film and television will return to the airwaves next month after NBC cancelled its January 2022 broadcast and major Hollywood companies and actors boycotted the event.

Jerrod Carmichael, a comedian and actor from the United States, will host the Golden Globes in January, when the annual awards event will be televised live for the first time, organisers announced on Thursday.

Following a backlash over ethical errors among the event’s organisers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and major Hollywood companies and performers boycotted the event, the Academy Awards for Film and Television will return to screens next month (HFPA).

The Comcast-owned network announced in September that it would restart live coverage of the Globes, citing actions taken by organisers to address ethics and a lack of diversity among voters.

Carmichael, who won an Emmy for his show “Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel” in September, joins Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Ricky Gervais, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon as a host.

In a statement, HFPA president Helen Hoehne stated, “His comedic talents have amused and pleased audiences while giving thought-provoking moments that are so vital in the times we live.”

“Jerrod is the kind of talent that this event requires to kick off the awards season.”

The Globes will be held for the 80th time on January 10th. As part of an agreement with the HFPA, NBC has agreed to airing the show for one year.

Following a Los Angeles Times investigation released in 2021, the HFPA was chastised for the lack of ethnic diversity among its members, and doubts were raised about whether strong links with movie studios influenced nominees and victories.

The HFPA responded with a slew of initiatives, including new ethics guidelines. It allowed 103 new voters from 62 nations other than the United States, increasing the total number of registered voters to 200.

According to NBC, the whole voting body for the Golden Globes is currently 52% female and 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse, with 19.5% Latino, 12% Asian, 10% Black, and 10% Middle Eastern members.

On Monday, nominations for the 2023 awards will be announced.
